3 Ways to Use Reading Rods from Hand2Mind

If you’ve picked up a pack of Reading Rods from Hand2Mind and thought they were neat but weren’t sure how to use them, I’ve got you covered! I’m sharing three fun, low-prep ways to put them to use so that students are using them as an effective way to practice phonics skills.

This blog post does contain affiliate links for Reading Rods that can be found here.

Spin and Build

These phonics spinners can be used in so many small group activities, or centers. Just spin a phonics pattern, and see how many words you can build and record with the Reading Rods that fit that pattern!

Choose your phonics skill, set up a sand timer, and race to see how many words you can build with your Reading Rods before the timer runs out!

Rod Races freebie recording sheet can be found for members of the Firstie Fam in the exclusive freebies section of my website here.

Picture This

Choose a phonics skill and cut/place some pictures of words that fit that particular phonics skill in a bag or bowl. Then grab a picture, build the word with your Reading Rods, and record the word on your recording sheet! Recording Sheets are freebies for the Firstie Fam.

My picture sets can be found in this Science of Reading Centers Bundle.

Let me know if you end up using Reading Rods in your classroom! There are so many different variations and ways that you can use them- I think they are such an amazing classroom tool to have!
